How to Get Started with Power BI

PreRequisites Guide

To enable us to install and implement Power BI within your practice the following areas need to be completed: -

  1. Purchase Microsoft Power BI Pro. A Power BI Pro licence is required for anyone who builds or consumes the reports and dashboards
  2. Ensure there is at least one member of staff who is proficient in using Power BI.  As it’s a Microsoft product, a wide range of free courses and tutorials can be found online. You can find a Power BI webinar from our team here
  3. Install and configure the on-premise gateway on a server close to or on the CCH Central database server. You can download the gateway here https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/downloads/
  4. Create a Windows account for accessing Windows file data through the gateway and test this works through the gateway
  5. Create a Workspace for Central Power BI Reports to be uploaded to
  6. Create a spreadsheet of all employees with columns: Short Name (i.e. Alex B, Alex W, Amanda) and Central employee code
  7. If your reporting teams are not based on Central employee groups, add another column to the spreadsheet with the name of each employee’s team
  8. Add extra sheets to the spreadsheet for any performance targets based on team or employee you would like in the reports. (We will examine these and let you know the work involved in incorporating these into your reports)

The aim of the Prerequisites guide is to provide you with all the information that you need to get your practice ready for the implementation of Power BI.
