This article explains how to submit a VAT return using Making Tax Digital (MTD) for VAT in CCH IFirm, including all required prerequisites, the end-to-end process, and key troubleshooting tips for common errors.

Prerequisites

  • The client must be enrolled for MTD for VAT with HMRC. Complete the registration on the HMRC website and wait for confirmation before proceeding.

  • The practice's Agent Services Account (ASA) must be linked to CCH IFirm. Enter the ASA credentials in Firm Settings. This is a one-time setup required before any submissions can be made.

  • Each client must authorise the practice as their agent on HMRC’s side. This is handled outside of CCH IFirm.

Steps

  1. Open CCH IFirm and navigate to Clients.
  2. Find and open the relevant client’s record.
  3. In the left-hand navigation panel, click VAT to access the VAT section for the client.
  4. The list of VAT periods (obligations) will be shown, automatically pulled from HMRC. For the latest data, click the refresh icon at the top of the obligations list.
  5. Click on the open obligation (status: Open or Due) to start the return.
  6. Review the VAT return form, which displays Boxes 1–9. Figures may auto-populate if CCH IFirm bookkeeping is used, but you may need to enter figures manually, especially for Box 7 and Box 8 where relevant.
  7. Always validate before you submit — Click Validate at the top of the return. This checks for missing fields and calculation errors. Any issues will be highlighted in red for correction.
  8. Once validation passes, the Validate button changes to Submit.
  9. Click Submit. Review the confirmation dialog showing key figures and the declaration. Tick the checkbox to confirm, then click Submit to HMRC.

Result

If the submission is successful, the return status updates to Submitted and an HMRC receipt reference is displayed and saved. The obligation in HMRC’s system is updated to Fulfilled. Practices should confirm the payment due date in the return summary and notify their client, as CCH IFirm does not send payment reminders.
